Canadian Rail Update: Proactive Preparations
Canadian Rail Updates
Proactive Preparations
Dear Valued Customers,
We would like to inform you of the proactive measures Ocean Network Express (ONE) has implemented to mitigate any potential impact on your cargo in light of the potential disruption to Canadian rail services starting Thursday, August 22, 2024, due to ongoing labor negotiations between the rail carriers and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC)
Key Updates:
1. Embargo on Toxic Inhalation Hazard (TIH/PIH) and Rail Security-Sensitive Materials (RSSM):
This embargo on sensitive cargo has been in effect since August 12, 2024, to ensure the safety and security of shipments during the potential disruption.
2. Embargo on Live Reefer and Dangerous Goods (DG) Commodities:
Embargoes on live reefer and DG commodities have been implemented on a lane-specific basis. Gate closures for shipments to BC Ports began at eastern origins on August 14, 2024, while closures for the Port of Halifax will be enforced by August 17, 2024. The import of live reefers via Vancouver has already been suspended as of August 13, 2024. Our dedicated cargo management team will notify affected customers directly with updated booking information.
3. Embargo for Interchange Cargo:
Acceptance of live reefer and DG commodities for cross-border interchange will end on August 15, 2024, and a full embargo on all interchange cargo will be effective August 16, 2024.
4. Non-DG Dry Cargo:
Non-DG dry cargo will continue to be accepted at inland terminals until August 21, 2024. Further acceptance of laden or empty containers will depend on the terminal capacity and the progression of the labor action.
ONE Support Measures
In the event of a work stoppage, ONE will suspend carrier-charged demurrage fees for containers already at the affected rail terminals.
For export containers that have not been returned, we request customers to hold onto them until further notice. Detention fees will be suspended in case of such events, but the storage and monitoring fees imposed by the railways will remain the customer’s responsibility. If you choose to collect import cargo directly from marine terminals, this will not incur diversion fees from ONE; however, handling and restow charges will still apply.
